Basic Peer Helping

This course seeks to assist students to develop basic helping skills to aid other students who may be experiencing a problem or a crisis. The course also aims to assist participants to develop skills to be resource persons for other students on campus. The course builds on a three stage model of helping which includes basic relating with others, understanding people’s experiences and assisting people to engage in problem solving strategies. The course also aims to support helpers to better be able to appreciate themselves, understand and challenges their own biases as well as become familiar with the potential resources both on and off campus aimed as serving students who maybe experiencing a crisis.

1. What is Peer Helping

2. The Helping Relationship & Helping Values

23 Sep

In this lesson, we will Define what is a value Identify some of our own personal values & the significance of these values for helping peers Identify basic helping values Examine what is the helping relationship Describe how the persona of the helper affects the helping relationship

3. Relating - Listening

30 Sep

In this lesson, we will Identify the significance of listening in the relating process

4. Attending & Empathic Highlighting

7 Oct

In this lesson, we will Identify & practice the relating skills of attending & empathic higlighting

5. Summarising & Questions

14 Oct

In this lesson, we will Identify & practice the understanding skills of summarising & using questions

6. Problem Solving

21 Oct

In this lesson, we will explore the skills associated with the problem-solving stage of peer helping.

7. Understanding Suicide

28 Oct

In this lesson we will examine some of the myths associated with suicide, identify some of the risk factors that make persons vulnerable to suicidal behaviour and examine some basic helping strategies for assisting persons who are suicidal.

8. Motivational Interviewing

25 Nov

In this lesson we will examine the change process and exlore and practice some basic motivational interviewing strategies as ways to engage peers who maybe less motivated to change.

9. Relating & Understanding

19 Feb

In these lessons we will focus on key skills used in the relating and understanding stages of helping

10. Drug & Alcohol Misuse

23 Oct

In this lesson we will focus on substance misuse

11. Stress

5 Apr

We will examine stress, how one copes and what one can do to regulate stress levels.
